During our Taichung rescue of Milu back in June of 2020, Milu’s right forelimb was missing a section.
We speculated that it was caused by the animal trap.
Missing a section of the limb makes Milu prone to feeling tired when walking.
Milu has to walk by lifting her right leg up to avoid the pain caused by rubbing her skin against the ground.

There are lots of animal traps in Taiwan and many veterinarians tend to suggest full leg amputation to avoid dog from scratching their legs.
However, we are reluctant to see her undergo yet another procedure, also, leg amputation doesn’t really solve the problem once and for all.
With this mindset, prosthetic dog leg came to our mind.
We’ve been looking for a suitable prosthetic limb for Milu before sending her to a new family.
Having done our due diligent, we found out that such technique in still not fully developed yet here in Taiwan.
We have to rely on a Taiwanese veterinary hospital that has a connection with a US prosthetic limb supplier to design a customized prosthetic.
We truly believe this is the best course of action to improve her quality of life for the next 10 years.

The process involved is quite complicated and long as the vet needs to evaluate if Milu is suitable for prosthetic installation.
The whole fabrication process took nearly two months because once the veterinary hospital received the materials from the states,
Milu has to go back to the hospital be put under anesthesia to mould the prosthetic limb to fit.
By the time Milu received prosthetic limb, she was about to be adopted by a new family.
We decided to let the new family help Milu get accustomed to utilizing her new prosthetic leg.
While the process will take time, it’s gratifying to see photos of Milu getting used to her new prosthetic leg on a daily basis.
Milu will surely be able to walk with her prosthetic leg in the near future.
We found ourself constantly pondering what’s the best course of action for the animals in the many rescue cases.
Picking prosthetics is certainly the most time consuming, costly, and labor intensive of all.
Nonetheless, Milu still has a long road ahead of her life.
We are more than willing to do whatever we can to make her run again with joy, more importantly, live a better quality of life.

Milu’s prosthetic limb is Meet Love’s wedding gift for her.
We are truly grateful for many of your help and love you’ve given us along the journey.
We will keep putting all the resource received to good use as always.
If you are interested in Milu’s new life, please feel free to follow her on Instagram!
